You have to be 18 years old to attend the school, and the big majority of students are between 18-25 years old, but there is no age limit as such. Most folk high schools have no curriculum, no grades and no exams. At the longer courses you will get a diploma as a proof of attendance.
For a Dane, the folk high school signifies both a historical movement and a modern institution for life-long popular education and learning. The folk high school institution was founded in 1844 and at Vallekilde we could celebrate our 150th birthday in 2015. Today there are around 80 folk high schools spread all over Denmark. The schools offer a large range of subjects including social sciences, philosophy, sports, and arts.
The folk high schools bring young people together and give them space to grow and develop as democratic citizens and individuals. It believes in the power of conversation and it is probably the single most original contribution Denmark has made to international thinking about popular education.
